Low Temperature Hot Water

Heating Systems

Overview Profile

This unregulated qualification has been developed to enable plumbing and heating engineers to demonstrate their competence in:

• Understanding the importance for the correct calculation of heat loss from a dwelling when low temperature hot water heating systems are being specified and installed.

• Designing low temperature heating systems for dwellings that use low temperature and/or low carbon heat sources.

Entry Requirements:

N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or

N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or

N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or

N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or

N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence. or

heating installers with experience installing wet central heating systems, evidenced either by manufacturer courses certification or Gas Safe Register, OFTEC, MCS or HETAS registration These pre-requisites are not required where this Qualification is being delivered as part of a recognised training course in any of the above

What does this qualification cover?

The qualification is aimed primarily at practicing plumbers and heating engineers who already have an understanding of the fundamental requirements of central heating systems and who wish to design and install energy efficient low temperature hot water heating systems that may use heat pumps as the heat source.

Who is this Qualification for?

The qualification is aimed primarily at practicing plumbers and heating engineers who already have an understanding of the fundamental requirements of central heating systems and who wish to design and install energy efficient low temperature hot water heating systems that may use heat pumps as the heat source. The qualification enables learners to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to design energy efficient low temperature hot water heating systems within the Building Services Engineering (BSE) sector. The target groups for the qualification are those learners who are:

• Updating occupational competence, continuous professional development and/or obtaining a licence to practice

• Preparing for further learning or training and/or developing knowledge and/or skills in a subject area and are existing workers in the occupation seeking to extend their range of work.

How is the qualification achieved?

Training is delivered over 2 days and to achieve the completion of this knowledge/performance unit the learner must satisfactorily complete one multiple-choice test and one written assessment for the learning outcomes within the qualification.

What could this qualification lead to?

The BPEC Low Temperature Hot Water Heating Systems is a recommended pre-requisite qualification to allow progression onto the BPEC Level 3 Award in Air Source Heat Pump Systems (Non-refrigerant Circuits) ETS-006, the BPEC Level 3 Award in Ground Source Heat Pump Systems (Non-refrigerant Circuits) ETS-007 and the BPEC Level 3 Award in Heat Pump Systems (Non-refrigerant Circuits) ETS-008.

Although designed as a recommended pre-requisite qualification to allow progression onto the BPEC suite of Heat Pump qualifications, this qualification can also be taken by those experienced operatives wishing to develop their skills in the design of low temperature domestic heating systems. The holder of this qualification is not recognised as a competent hot water and heating systems (low temperature) installer. However, the holder is recognised as being competent to carry out the design of hot water and heating systems (low temperature).
