Gas Course for Plumbers

If you are a qualified plumber (NVQ Diploma Level 2 or above) then you are qualified as a Category 2 entrant into the Gas Industry.

At the end of this course you will sit your ACS assessment and receive a certificate which will enable you to apply to gas safe to become a registered gas engineer. We conduct a short informal interview assessment to assess whether you are suitable to join the course or not.

How does the course work?

You will complete an on site gas portfolio provided by BPEC which you will need to complete by working with a qualified and registered gas engineer. Youou will also undergo gas training in our purpose built centre before finally sitting your ACS assessment (CCN1). If you don’t have a gas engineer to work with, we can provide you with a work placement.

What does the gas portfolio entail?

In order to complete your gas work portfolio you will need to complete a number of hours on gas installation, servicing & commission. You will need to be accompanied by a qualified gas engineer who will guide you through the different processes of gas rating the appliances, servicing the appliances, using a flue gas analyser. You will then be expected to record what you did and the results you found into your gas portfolio.

Areas that will be covered in the course include:

  • Legislation and Gas Safety
  • Combustion and its Control
  • Chimneys
  • Ventilation
  • Pressure, Flow, Tightness Testing and Purging
  • Domestic Pipework Installation
  • Electrical Systems, Controls and Components
  • Heating Design, Heat Loss and Comfort Conditions
  • Installation and Servicing of Domestic Central Heating and Hot Water Appliances
  • Principles and Procedures of Fault Diagnosis

What happens once the course is completed?

Once your in-house gas training is complete and your portfolio is finished and signed off by our internal quality assurance team you will receive your Gas Foundation Certificate. You will then be able to complete your ACS assessment for CCN1. You will then be a qualified gas engineer who can apply to join the gas safe register, and after 6 months you will be able to add units to this qualification by doing further training and assessments.
